1885: Founded by Allan Octavian Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha & Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee
1905: Gopala Krishna Gokhale elected as President of INC
1920: INC became the principle leader of Indian Independence movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi
1938-1939: Subash Chandrabose served as President of INC
1951-1966: Jawaharlal Nehru was the party leader
1959: C.Rajgopalachari came out from INC against the domination of Jawaharlal Nehru and started a new party called Swatantra Party(SWP)
1967-1980: Indira Gandhi was the party leader
1967: Charan Singh came out of INC and started a new party called Bharatiya Kranti Dal(BKD) and later in 1977 it merged with Janata party
1969: Biju Patnaik came out of INC and started a new party called Utkal Congress(UC) and later in 1974 it merged with Bharatiya Lok dal(BLD)
1969: When Indira Gandhi was expelled from Congress party, 446 of 705 members walked over to Indira’s side and there was a split, which emerged a new party called Indian national congress (organisation) – INC (O). Later in 1977, it merged with Janata Party(JP)
1974: Charan Singh came out of INC opposing the rule of Indira Gandhi and started a new party called Bharatiya Lok Dal(BLD)
1978: D.Devaraj Urs came out of INC and formed a new party called Indian Congress(Socialist). In 1979 Devaraj joined Janata party. And later in 1986 one section of the party lead by Sharad Pawar merged with INC
1984-1990: Rajiv Gandhi was the party leader
1991-1997: PV Narasimha Rao was the party leader
1996: Narayan Datt Tiwari, Arjun Singh, Natwar Singh & Rangarajan Kumaramangalam came out from INC and formed a new party called All India Indira Congress (Tiwari)-AIIC(T). Later in 1998, it merged with INC, when Sonia Gandhi took over the party.
1998: Sitaram Kesari was the party leader
1999-2013: Sonia Gandhi was the party leader
1999: Sharad Pawar, PA Sangma & Tariq Anwar expelled from INC and they formed a new party called National Congress party(NCP)
2014-2019: Rahul Gandhi was the party leader
